What Domains Starwood Hotels and Other End Users Bought This Week

August 10, 2011Afternic, Domain Sales, Domaining, DomainnamewireComments Off

Hotel chain among end user domain name buyers this week.

As I do every week, here’s a look at end user domain purchases from Afternic for the past week.

First let’s start with the big name: Starwood Hotels and Resorts. The company paid $1,188 for OnlyInHawaii.com. Specifically, it looks like the buyer was the Sheraton Waikiki.

The rest of the purchases are upgrades where a company drops a superfluous word or upgrades its TLD.

Cincinatti-based The Urology Group, which owns TheUrologyGroup.net and .cc, upgraded to UrologyGroup.com for $4,000.

Some guy named David Sims upgraded from David-Sims.co.uk to DavidSims.com for $3,588.

Human Resources company The Centennial Group spent $3,500 to move from GoCentennial.com to TheCentennial.com.

Marketing and interactive agency Rocket Red improved its domain from GoRocketRed.com to RocketRed.com for $1,500.

Here are some other notable domain sales at Afternic this week:

A look at Afternic sales for the week.

I didn’t find a lot of interesting end user domain purchases through Afternic this week. The amount of disclosed sales was lower than usual thanks to the holiday weekend and a number of domains are still pending transfer. But here’s a look at some of the more interesting sales:

Medical company YGM Group, LLC upgraded its domain name from TheYGMGroup.com to just YGMgroup.com for $2,000.

London & Partners, which bills itself “The Official Promotional Agency for London”, may be getting ready to cheat on London. It paid $1,200 for LondonandParis.com.

Kent Metals, which owns WeBuyAnyMetal.com, wants to get metal out of cable with its purchase of CableRecycling.com for $1,000.

Here are other notable sales for the week.

How To Quickly Get Your Domain Names on Afternic Premium

July 11, 2011Afternic, Domain Sales, Domaining, DomainnamewireComments Off

Here’s the simplest way to bulk upload domains to Afternic‘s Premium level service.

Listing domain names on services that offer syndicated, instant-transfer listings can be a bit of work. It takes more than just uploading your domain names; at a minimum you need to set prices and often times add categories.

Today I updated my Afternic Premium Promotion list by adding a couple hundred more domains that were in my Moniker account. Some of these were in my Afternic account but not on Premium level and some weren’t in the account at all. Here’s the fastest way to do it.

1. Login to your Afternic account.

2. Go to www.afternic.com/pfupload.php.

3. Select the “file upload” tool tab, then scroll down to “download bulk file”.

4. Save the .csv to your computer and open it. Don’t change the file name.

5. Enter this information in the spreadsheet:

-Add new domains in column A
-Set a minimum offer in column B. This is the minimum someone can offer you for the domain if they aren’t buying instantly. The number isn’t all that important.
-Set an asking price in column E. This is how much someone can pay to buy the domain instantly. Amount must be higher than what you put in column B.
-I recommend also setting a floor price in column D. This is the minimum price an Afternic sales rep can negotiate on your behalf to sell the domain. It can’t be more than your asking price nor less than your minimum offer.
-Type “3″ (no quotes) in column K
-I also recommend entering a main category and secondary category in columns F & G

6. Go back to your Afternic bulk page and click “upload my .csv file”.

Once your file is uploaded it will start to process. You will then need to follow the required steps at your registrar to approve the domains for the Afternic instant-transfer service.

NameMedia Expands With London Office

Company expands European footprint.

NameMedia is expanding its European footprint with a new office in London. The company will announce the expansion today.

The domain seller, which operates Afternic and BuyDomains, has hired Nadya Morozova as its European Business Development Manager. Morozova was previously Director of Community Outreach for the .tel registry.

Afternic is well known for its sales prowess through the U.S. registrar channel. But earlier this year it signed a deal with three European companies that collectively own 12 domain registrars to join its distribution network.

Customers can list their domains on Afternic using the “Premium” promotion level to get their domains listed for sale on these registrars. Registrar customers can buy the domain names like they would a typical domain name and get it instantly transferred into their account.

The new office and employee will help the company expand these registrar distribution relationships.

Afternic is still relatively weak on country code and non-English domain names, so it will be interesting to see if one of the goals here is to expand its offerings outside of .com/.net/.org.

Domain Names End Users Bought This Week

July 5, 2011Afternic, Domain Sales, Domaining, DomainnamewireComments Off

8 examples of end users buying generic domains for their businesses.

As I did with last week’s sales report, I’m taking a look at some of Afternic‘s sales to end users for the week.

Laser Spine Institute bought GoodbyeBackPain.com for $2,880. Goodbye back pain, but also a “good buy”.

JS Tour and Travel, which specializes in tours to the Caribbean, Hawaii and Mexico bought cancunfishing.com for $2,588.

Andover, Massachusetts jewelry and watch store Royal Jewelers, which has a section on its web site for pre-owned watches, bought PreownedWatch.com for $2,250.

CampingWorld.com, which bought RiderWorld.com through Afternic last week, picked up BoatingIndustry.com for $25,000.

Plastic card printer Tele-Pak bought CustomGiftCards.com for $1,650.

EMI Music / Capitol Recording bought NatKingCole.com for $6,600. This one has an interesting history, having been owned by what appears to be a group connected to the singer but the domain later expired.

Absolute Pools and Waterscapes, which forwards AbsolutePoolsandWaterscapes.com to an equally long domain name, upgraded to AbsolutePools.com for $1,500.

CostumeSupercenter.com bought WholesaleMedicalScrubs.com for $1,288.

A look at end user domain buyers from the past week.

Afternic‘s extended network of domain name sales sites brings in end users. I thought it would be interesting to take a look at some of the company’s $600,000+ in domain sales for the past week and who the buyers were.

Consulting firm Bain bought Repeatability.com for $4,000. Sounds like a strategic consulting name to me!

Monarch Mortgage upgraded its domain name from MonarchMtg.com to MonarchMortgage.com for only $15,000.

Online car auction site Copart paid $26,056 to buy SellCar.com from iREIT.

RV and camping e-commerce store CampingWorld.com bought RiderWorld.com for $2,100. That’s a cheap price to enter a new shopping category!

Trade union NY Hotel Trades Council bought HotelWorkers.com for only $2,960, which is probably less than union dues for one person for a year.

The UK owner of Investmentland.com paid $2,688 for the .org version of his domain name. Maybe instead of investing in land, people should invest in domain names.

Avere Systems paid $2,810 for avere.net. They haven’t yet been able to buy Avere.com.

Oversee.net has sold Chop.com from its owned and operated portfolio with the help of Afternic.

Puzzle.com Domain Name Sells for $500,000

May 10, 2011Afternic, Domain Sales, Domaining, DomainnamewireComments Off

Another big domain name sale to report.

Domain name marketplace Afternic has completed the sale of Puzzle.com for a whopping $500,000.

It’s unclear if the sale was handled on behalf of a third party seller or Afternic’s parent company. The old whois information for the domain included a Waltham, Massachusetts (the same city where the company is located) post office box and an email address for the BuyDomains brokerage.

The buyer is based in Amsterdam.

Puzzle.com wasn’t the only big sale Afternic closed this past week. It sold the three letter domain name EJU.com for $96,000.
