Neustar Announces .Biz Price Increase

July 31, 2011.biz, Domaining, Domainnamewire, Neustar, Policy & LawComments Off on Neustar Announces .Biz Price Increase

.Biz registration and renewal prices increase in six months.

Neustar has informed its registrars and ICANN that it will increase its annual prices for .biz domain names effective February 1, 2012. The new price will be $7.85, or 55 cents more than the current $7.30 per year. That’s about 7.5%.

This wholesale price does not include ICANN’s 18 cent “tax” per domain year registered.

Neustar’s notice to ICANN does not include a reason for the price increase.

Price increases from leading registries Neustar, VeriSign, and Afilias might come under more scrutiny as they begin offering registry services to third parties applying for new top level domain names. If they offer services for $2 per domain, it may become harder to justify the prices they charge for incumbent domain names.

But I doubt ICANN will pay attention. It just renewed VeriSign’s .net contract with 10% annual price increases…without justification for those increases.

.Biz Prices to Increase Along with .Org

September 30, 2010.biz, Domaining, Domainnamewire, Neustar, UncategorizedComments Off on .Biz Prices to Increase Along with .Org

Another domain name price increase announced.

.Biz domain name registry NeuStar has informed ICANN (pdf) that it intends to raise wholesale prices for .biz domain names effective April 1, 2011. That’s the same time that Public Interest Registry will raise its rates on .org domain names to $7.21.

The wholesale cost of a .biz domain name will increase from $6.85 to $7.30. That does not include an ICANN fee of $.18 cents that registrars must pay, so the wholesale cost will really be $7.48. With about 2 million domain names registered, .biz will bring in about $15 million to NeuStar per year under the new pricing.

Most domain name registrars I use bake in a fairly healthy margin to .biz domain registrations, so I’m unsure how much of this cost will be passed on to registrars. For example, Go Daddy typically charges $14.99 per year for a .biz domain.

Moniker to Auction Off 1 and 2 Character .Biz Domain Names

October 21, 2009.biz, Domain Sales, Domaining, Domainnamewire, Moniker, NeustarComments Off on Moniker to Auction Off 1 and 2 Character .Biz Domain Names

More .biz domains heading to auction next week.

dot bizFollowing on the heals of Neustar’s successful auction of one and two character .biz domain names on Sedo, the company has inked a deal to sell a number of domains through Moniker. The domains will be auctioned at next week’s TRAFFIC conference in Brooklyn, as well as in Moniker’s extended online auction following the event.

Sedo’s auction included only one character domains, as Neustar was still seeking proposals from companies interested in developing two character domains at the time of the auction. With the RFP period closed, two character domains can now be auctioned.

Perhaps the best domain in the auction will be i.biz, but there are several location-specific domains that should attract attention:

TX.biz – Texas
KC.biz – Kansas City
OK.biz – Oklahoma
NY.biz – New York

All domains will be offered at no reserve.

e.Biz Sells for $66,001

September 30, 2009.biz, Domain Sales, Domaining, Domainnamewire, Neustar, sedoComments Off on e.Biz Sells for $66,001

e.Biz steals the show at successful one character .biz auction.

It’s no surprise that e.Biz was the top selling domain name in Sedo’s one character .biz domain name auction.

But $66,001?

That will certainly turn a lot of heads. Especially since the winner could have picked the domain up for a few hundred dollars and a commitment to develop/market it had it gone through .biz registry Neustar’s RFP process.

About 20 bidders participated, but just two bidders fought it out after the bidding hit $25,750.

The sale will attract a lot of attention to the .biz top level domain name, and perhaps stoke a bit of fire into .biz domain values.

Although e.biz was the show-stopper, many other domains sold for respectable prices, too. 1.biz sold for $32,003. It will be interesting to see how this domain is used, as I’d think you would also want to one one.biz.

Please note that these are unofficial results that I collected.

1.biz $32,003
2.biz $5,801
4.biz $7,601
5.biz $6,100
6.biz $8,100
7.biz $7,877
8.biz $8,200
9.biz $7,901
a.biz $10,099
b.biz $10,005
c.biz $8,988
d.biz $26,110
e.biz $63,001
f.biz $8,250
g.biz $9,400
h.biz $5,300
j.biz $8,250
k.biz $6,900
l.biz $5,000
m.biz $15,611
n.biz $8,001
p.biz $7,878
r.biz $8,855
s.biz $8,211
t.biz $7,602
u.biz $10,009
v.biz $6,100
w.biz $13,500
x.biz $10,099
y.biz $8,988
z.biz $8,988

e.Biz and x.biz Off to Strong Start in Domain Name Auction

September 24, 2009.biz, Domain Sales, Domaining, Domainnamewire, sedoComments Off on e.Biz and x.biz Off to Strong Start in Domain Name Auction

One character .biz domain name auction off to strong start.

An auction for one letter and one number .biz domain names at Sedo is off to a strong start.

After just a day of bidding, e.biz leads the pack at $6,201 with 17 bids. X.com biz is close behind at $5,000 with four bids. It appears that all domains have a reserve of $5,000, and only e.biz and x.biz have met their reserves so far. However, many other domains are getting close, including u.biz and 1.biz.

The interesting thing to me is that anyone who came up with a decent plan to develop and promote e.biz could have had it for a lot less through the registry’s RFP process. That’s how Overstock got O.biz.

The .biz auction ends September 30.

September’s Great Domains auction at Sedo ends today. So far the highest priced domain to hit its reserve is 79.net at 5,900 EUR.

Overstock.com to Launch O.Biz

September 14, 2009.biz, Domaining, Domainnamewire, single letter domain, UncategorizedComments Off on Overstock.com to Launch O.Biz

Overstock wins RFP for single letter .biz domain name.

Overstock.com o.bizIn the first material sign that the release of one and two character .biz domain names could be a boon for the .biz top level domain, Overstock.com has won the RFP for the O.biz domain name. The company will launch a B2B site for businesses to buy goods online at the domain name.

According to a press release, O.BIZ will primarily focus on restaurant, office, and hotel products.

All one character .biz domain names that were not claimed through the RFP process will be auctioned off at Sedo later this month. The domain that will probably attract the most attention is E.biz.

It doesn’t surprise me that Overstock went after this single letter domain, as the company seems intent on acquiring O.com in the future, if it is ever released. It has already filed a trademark for that mark.
