DevHub’s Social Web Site Building Off to Strong Start

July 13, 2010devhub, Domain Services, Domaining, DomainnamewireComments Off on DevHub’s Social Web Site Building Off to Strong Start

Web site builder gaining new users — and new developed sites — every minute.

Last month I wrote about DevHub‘s latest web site builder release and noted that the company was adding a social element to building web sites.

The social functionality just went live this week, and so far user engagement is up significantly. Most importantly, new users are spending more time developing their web sites. Over 1,500 sites have been created in the past 12 hours and nearly 5,000 tasks completed. Tasks include adding content, creating links, etc.

The idea behind the game is to get people to do more with their web sites and avoid “orphan” web sites.

TechCrunch did a write-up of the release earlier this week.

A pro user who’s been using DevHub for a while? Don’t worry, you can turn the gaming elements off if you’d like.

DevHub Launches Latest Web Builder Release

June 14, 2010devhub, Domain Services, Domaining, DomainnamewireComments Off on DevHub Launches Latest Web Builder Release

Company targets niche enthusiasts with latest release.

Last Monday I made a quick stop at DevHub’s offices in Seattle before heading to the DomainTools open house.

From the moment I walked in to the office it was clear that people hadn’t been getting much sleep there. The company just launched the latest version of its easy-to-use web site creator and there have been a lot of sleepless nights getting it into production.

Most notable in the new version is a change in the marketing pitch. DevHub is aiming its marketing at topical enthusiasts who want to get on the web easily. This can be anyone from a model railroad fan to a local business needing a web presence. DevHub gives them an easy platform to create a web site and monetize it using a vast network of advertisers.

One of the key issues for companies such as DevHub is getting people to do more than just create a bare-bones web site. Web sites need care and feeding, and DevHub has added a social element to spur this. Users are given tasks they can complete and earn points for doing them.

This client segment should result in higher quality sites on the DevHub network — which will translate into better results for everyone.

5 Alternatives to Traditional Domain Name Parking

April 13, 2010devhub, Domain Parking, Domaining, Domainnamewire, epik, octane360, rootorange, smartname, whyparkComments Off on 5 Alternatives to Traditional Domain Name Parking

Parking revenue got you down? Here are 5 alternatives to try.

Here are five alternatives to traditional pay-per-click domain parking.

RootOrange – RootOrange will lease your domain name on a local basis to multiple parties. In theory, this leasing will provide you with a steady income stream that should top what you can achieve by using the domain at an international-only level. Check out DivorceLawyer.com for an example.

Shopping Feeds – if you have a product domain, you should consider “developing” your domain by including products on the page. This will make it look like an e-commerce site. SmartName offers SmartName Shops, which uses a PPC feed from Shopping.com. You can also try Epik Product, which uses various affiliate feeds. Epik charges a set up fee, but offers a guarantee.

Octane360 – Octane360 creates directory sites on your geo domain names (e.g. WashingtonAllergists.com) and then sells directory listings to local businesses via a call center. Sites can also be monetized using PPC and pay-per-lead.

DevHub – DevHub offers a simple, WYSIWYG editor to create web sites quickly. You can drag-and-drop shopping product feeds, news, video widgets, and more. Monetization is primarily through PPC, but also includes affiliate and CPA options.

WhyPark – now owned by domain parking company Parked.com, WhyPark quickly develops domain names using articles and other syndicated content. You can also add your own custom content for better results. Although this is traditionally recommended for domains that don’t get much traffic, WhyPark has been able to take good type-in domains and make more money than with traditional parking.

DNW Radio – DevHub Founders

December 21, 2009devhub, DNW Radio, Domaining, DomainnamewireComments Off on DNW Radio – DevHub Founders

Cofounders and management team of web site building platform talk on DNW Radio.

In this episode of DNW Radio, we talk with EVO Media Group founders Geoff Nuval, Mark Michael, and Daniel Rust. EVO Media Group is known for its DevHub web site building platform.

I first met Nuval on the bus ride to the Playboy Mansion at this year’s DOMAINfest Global in Los Angeles. They’ve had a wild year since then: they’re expanding quickly and have closed on $1.5 million in capital.

In this show, you’ll hear about:

-What types of domain names work well with DevHub, and how soon you should expect to see results
-The difference between “setting it and forgetting” it and actually devoting some energy to building out your sites
-A funny gimmick Geoff and Mark used when first approaching their initial investor, Rob Monster
-2010 road map for DevHub.
-What to do if you’re interested in working for the company.

As always, you can either listen to the show or read a transcript.

DevHub Creator Snags $1.5 Million Investment

November 25, 2009devhub, Domain Services, Domaining, DomainnamewireComments Off on DevHub Creator Snags $1.5 Million Investment

EVO Media Group picks up investment from private equity group and angel investors.

EVO Media Group, Inc., the company behind web site building platform DevHub, has secured a $1.5 million investment. In addition to an undisclosed private equity group, investors include a number of angels: Geoff Entress of Voyager Capital, John Cunningham of Clearfir, Alex Algard CEO of WhitePages.com, Jeff Schrock of Intel Capital, Richard Wolpert (former President of Disney Online). Many from this group have backed successful Seattle ventures in the past, most recent of note include BuddyTV and Pet Holdings (the group behind ICanHasCheezburger and FailBlog).

DevHub SVP Strategic Marketing/Co-Founder Mark Michael told me via email “We are ready to grow this into a huge media company!”

The company already began expanding its office space last month. It’s looking to hire more developers, too.

Epik founder Rob Monster was an original investor in EVO. The DevHub platform is the basis for Epik’s network of web sites.
