Visiting Flippa in Melbourne, Australia

Behind every internet company there are some bricks and mortar. Here’s where Flippa lives.

My wife had one rule during our trip to Australia over the past two weeks: no business meetings.

Unfortunately for her (but good for me) I had already scheduled one before she put the rule in place.

Flippa officeSo last week I rode the train to just north of downtown Melbourne to visit Flippa.

For the uninitiated, Flippa is to the web site selling business as Sedo and Afternic are to domain names.

Flippa is the largest marketplace for selling established web sites. Over the past week it has received nearly 8,000 bids and sold about $400,000 worth of web sites. Last year the company sold almost $31 million worth of web sites; to date the company has sold over $86 million.

Flippa shares a building with SitePoint and hot startup 99Designs. The company started as part of the SitePoint Marketplace that launched in 2005. As the number of web site listings on the marketplace continued to grow, the company decided to spin it out in 2009.

Although Flippa’s bread and butter is selling established web sites, it also lands some high profile domain name listings as well. Right now it has an auction for that has garnered a lot of press. The ability to instantaneously create an auction for a domain name (albeit for a $29 listing fee) is one of the draws of Flippa compared to Sedo and Afternic.

As more and more domainers get into web site development, Flippa figures to play a bigger role in domainers’ businesses going forward. office

Flippa adds verified Google Adsense revenue

Web site buyers can gain more confidence in revenue numbers.

FlippaFlippa, a marketplace for web sites and domain names, has added a tool to verify Google Adsense revenue numbers for web sites.

We all see sites for sale that claim huge Adsense revenue numbers. But how do you know if the person is telling the truth? It’s easy to fake stats. (That was the point behind DNWStats, by the way.)

The new tool allows Flippa sellers to authorize Flippa to snag the numbers through the Google Adsense API. Flippa then presents a three month average to visitors. Buyers can filter auctions to look at only sites with verified Adsense numbers.

It will be interesting to see what effects this has on the overall Flippa marketplace. But it can only be positive.

Amercia, land of the free.

There’s an amusing story over at Mashable about the Chinese owner of the domain name, a typo of His story of why he bought the domain is heartwarming, but it’s worth noting that he owns at least 39 domain names. So think what you want.

The owner bought the domain in 2009 for $100. He received an occasional offer on the domain. But then recently he claims he received four inquiries about the domain within 24 hours, Mashable reports.

This spike in inquiries appears to be linked to a viral goofup in a Mitt Romney smartphone app. His campaign released an app that included the phrase “A Better Amercia”.

Now the owner wants to cash in. He has listed the domain on Flippa. It has a single bid at $2,200, but it hasn’t met the reserve price.

Frankly, the domain’s not worth squat in the long run. But I suppose a politician could make good use of it. And I give the owner credit for getting a lot of press.
