Google Kills URL Forwarding as Yahoo Caps Some Non-.Com Domains

Domain parking ad providers make changes.

There have been two announcements from the big domain parking ad providers over the past 24 hours that may affect your domain parking company.

According to an email from NameDrive, Google is banning URL forwarding as of October 1. The parking company says clients need to switch to DNS parking, although it says it’s also working on other solutions. [Update: DomainSponsor just sent a notice to its customers as well.]

Partners have known about Google’s plan to ban URL forwarding for a long time.

It will be interesting to see what effect Google’s move will have on domain parking split-testing platforms such as Above.

TrafficZ sent an email to customers yesterday informing them that Yahoo is “capping” revenue on .biz, .co,
.info, .tv, and .us domain names. If the cap is hit, Yahoo will no longer show ads on the domains for three days. However, parking companies will likely display ads from different ad feeds during this period. From my experience, some of these secondary feeds perform quite well on certain TLDs.

Both of these moves address challenges with domain parking; namely fraud. URL forward is frequently abused and limits Google’s insight into the traffic it is monetizing. Domains such as .biz shouldn’t get much type-in traffic, which may be the reason for the cap.

Major Domain Parking Shift? NameDrive Adding Site Links and Site Reviews.

Google to start syndicating more ad data to parking companies.

In one what could prove to be a major move for Google Adsense for Domains partners, NameDrive will begin showing site links and site reviews with some of its parked page links.

These options have already been offered to Google Adwords advertisers on Google.com for a while.

Here’s an example of an ad including additional “site links”:

And an example that includes a site review:

You’ve probably seen product ads on Google.com that also include pictures. Could those be far behind? Will Google Adsense for Content on regular web sites also start syndicating ads like this in the future?

It would certainly make sense. Google has been testing this ad style for a while and wouldn’t start syndicating it if it didn’t work.

NameDrive Releases Details on Investment and Reorganization

January 21, 2011Domain Parking, Domaining, Domainnamewire, namedriveComments Off on NameDrive Releases Details on Investment and Reorganization

Parking company confirms recent investment and restructuring.

Today I received information from domain name parking and sales company NameDrive about its recent investment from BIP Investment Partners and its company reorganization.

News of the investment and reorganization was first reported by Domain Name News on Tuesday. [Update: DNN's source was DVmag.de.]

BIP Investment Partners S.A., a public investor listed on the Luxembourg stock exchange, made an undisclosed investment in the company. BIP is no stranger to domain names; it holds investments in German registrar Key-Systems, Luxembourgian registrar EuroDNS, domain fund Domain Invest, as well as Polish registrar az.pl.

Michael Riedl, Investment Director at BIP says, “We want NameDrive to be the Apple of the domain parking industry.”

NameDrive now has three subsidiaries: NameDrive EU Sàrl and NameDrive IP Sàrl (Luxembourg), NameDrive US LLC (Texas, U.S.) and NameDrive SRL (Romania). I toured NameDrive’s facilities in Austin last year.

Founded in 2005, the parking company is known for its prowess in monetizing international domain names. Its parking pages are in 21 languages, the company’s homepage is available in 8 languages, and its staff members typically speak at least two languages. The company says it has over 75,000 customers and has sold over $10 million in domains on its NDX Market since launching it in 2008.

NameDrive to Auction 760 Three Letter .EU Domains Starting at 1 Euro

June 9, 2010Domain Sales, Domaining, Domainnamewire, namedriveComments Off on NameDrive to Auction 760 Three Letter .EU Domains Starting at 1 Euro

Three letter domains starting at just 1 Euro.

NameDrive’s NDX market is running an auction for 760 three letter .eu domain names starting tomorrow. Each domain starts at 1 euro. That’s like a buck twenty starting price, although it might be cheaper by tomorrow if the Euro keeps sliding. The auction will run for seven days.

In order to bid you’ll need to open a NameDrive account before the auction starts, and will also need to fill out a “Certified Trader Application” to be eligible.

Most of the domain names have letters such as z, q, and x in them. But at just one euro to start, these domains should sell. [Update: There is a 20 EUR reserve on each domain.]

NDX market is NameDrive’s online domain name aftermarket. According to the company it sells over $1 million worth of domain names a month.

NameDrive Launches Japanese Language Parking Platform

February 18, 2010Domain Parking, Domaining, Domainnamewire, japanese domain parking, namedriveComments Off on NameDrive Launches Japanese Language Parking Platform

Domain parking company to launch Japanese parking platform.

NameDriveDomain name parking company NameDrive will launch a Japanese-language parking platform tomorrow.

NameDrive has partnered with ICANN-accredited and .JP-accredited domain registrar WIXI to provide the parking program for the Japanese market. It is designed for owners of domain names in Japan or domains using the Japanese language.

Founded in 2005, NameDrive has been one of the major parking companies to embrace Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), which will be important in the Japanese market. The company says the platform will be the first parking program with full support in an Asian language. The company manages over 1 million parked domains.

When the platform is launched overnight/tomorrow, customers can access the system by selecting the Japanese language option on NameDrive’s home page, or at park.wixi.jp.
