Go Daddy Customers Register 600 Steve Jobs Domains in 36 Hours

People try to make a quick buck off Steve Jobs’ death.

When news happens, domains get registered.

People registered 1,517 domain names related to Osama bin Laden being killed in the 15 hours after news of his death broke — at GoDaddy alone.

Over a hundred hurricane domain names were registered in the wake of Hurricane Irene.

And now comes Steve Jobs and the (mostly) tasteless registrations of 600 related domain names in the 36 hours after news of his death broke. That’s the number just at Go Daddy. For comparison, only 14 Steve Jobs domains were registered at GoDaddy in all of September.

As with domains registered in the wake of previous news events, a lot of these registrants are trying to cash in on someone else’s misfortune.

Right now on eBay you can buy InMemoryofSteveJobs.com for $10 million.

Perhaps the most telling eBay listing is for AppleFounderSteveJobs.Com. The seller says he feels bad about Jobs’ death, but apparently not bad enough to make a quick buck off it:

Although some eBayers will think selling this domain name is inappropriate given his recent passing, you need to remember that Steve Jobs reached the level of success he did by being an entrepreneur with an incrededible vision and an unyeilding passion for success. I have incredible respect for his accomplishments and, in a personal way, mourn the loss of his death even though I did not know Steve Jobs…
